Two weeks later, at Meta Connect 2026, Wang took the stage in a camouflage deer-print T-shirt he said cost $30 at a Santa Cruz second-hand store, 36Kr reported, and announced that Walmart, Best Buy, Gap, Sephora and Wayfair were integrating with Muse, BreakingTheNews reported. Wang was born in January 1997 in Los Alamos, New Mexico, to two physicists at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He worked at Quora as a programmer before enrolling at MIT, which he left in 2016 to co-found Scale AI with Lucy Guo. Scale AI grew to a nearly $29 billion valuation under his leadership, and Meta's leadership page says Scale AI "was involved in the development of most every leading model across the industry," while Wikipedia describes it as providing data labeling and model evaluation services used to develop AI. In 2021, at age 24, Wang briefly became the world’s youngest self-made billionaire, according to Forbes. Meta brought him in to revamp its AI strategy after the underwhelming reception of its open Llama models. After the deal, Wang set up Meta Superintelligence Labs and its TBD Lab, ABAB News reported. Under him, MSL developed Muse Spark, code-named Avocado and released in April 2026, CNBC said. Thomas Randall of Info-Tech Research Group told CNBC Muse Spark was designed to plug into Meta’s apps and devices such as Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Rob May, CEO of Neurometric, told CNBC in June 2026 that the AI community largely ignored Meta, and that Muse Spark was a “yawn” because it wasn’t widely accessible. Wang, speaking to the *Core Memory* podcast, said, “One of the things that is very important to me is safety for these models.” Muse is designed to be proactive and long-running. It lives in a chat thread, runs on a dedicated virtual machine in Meta’s cloud with a visible browser, and uses a separate system called Sentinel to decide whether each action is allowed, blocked, or sent to the user for approval. Wang told Axios, “For the vast majority of users, they should be able to do what they need to within the free tier.” He described the goal as “personal superintelligence that helps people accomplish their goals, pursue their passions, build things that they never would have built if they didn’t have the technology.” According to ABAB News, Muse runs on Muse Spark models, versions 1 to 1.3, designed specifically for agents, able to browse, use apps and keep working after the app is closed. Agents never see real passwords or card numbers. Wang has said the Spark series was developed for Muse for months, the product and the model sharing a name. Zuckerberg wrote on X that Meta "delayed the launch of Muse by several months to focus on safety and security" and that "Meta Superintelligence Labs built its security framework with independent evaluators and advisers involved," the Seoul Economic Daily reported. Vishal Shah, Meta's vice president of AI products, said: "We can't promise Muse will never make a mistake, but we designed it to protect personal information as thoroughly as possible." Wang has promoted Muse aggressively, often on X, where he calls himself “Tweet Cannon.” Days after launch, he asked whether Muse could “make you $1,000,” starting a savings challenge. Many replies came from Meta employees, Business Insider reported, and none of the savings came with independent before-and-after figures, The Next Web noted. Wang has promoted Jolly, Muse’s mascot, with a stream of AI-generated memes on X, some of them risqué, Futurism reported. The default avatar is Jolly, and Wang has shown off using his own dog as a personalized avatar, ABAB News said. Muse’s early adoption numbers were strong: Sensor Tower reported 2.8 million downloads in the first 12 days in the U.S. and Canada, ahead of ChatGPT’s 1.3 million over the same span. Over the same stretch, Amazon blocked Muse from placing orders on September 21, 2026, and Reuters reported that Meta tested, then halted, a “human concierge” feature where contract workers would handle some of Muse’s calls due to data-leak concerns, the Seoul Economic Daily said. Meta’s stock rose 26.8% between September 8 and September 24, 2026, from $613.48 to $777.59. Wang’s approach to building Muse reflects his broader philosophy. In an open letter, “Why I’m Building Muse,” published after Meta Connect 2026, he described Muse as an all-around manager that could understand half-spoken sentences, help people make plans, send emails, and find funding. He wrote, “Every unfulfilled aspiration is a silent tragedy of human potential.” 36Kr described his style as a deliberately built brand image that strips off the gloss of corporate elites.
